Financial Times Seasonal Appeal 2017/18 supports Alzheimer’s Research UK & you can help

There is a misconception that dementia is just an inevitable part of getting older, but dementia (like Cancer and AIDS) is caused by diseases.

Alzheimer’s disease has been the most common cause of dementia for over 40 years. There are more than half a million people in the UK with Alzheimer’s disease. Today nearly 47 million people worldwide are living with dementia. The disease causes proteins to build up in the brain to form structures called ‘Amyloid plaques’ and ‘Tau tangles’. This leads to the loss of connections between nerve cells, and eventually to the death of nerve cells and loss of brain tissue.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is at the forefront of the fight to find a breakthrough for better treatments. Through the Financial Times Seasonal Appeal, you can support their pioneering work. A matching scheme for donations up to a total of £300,000 has been generously provided by Goldman Sachs.

Funds raised through the Financial Times Seasonal Appeal will go to support their Drug Discovery Alliance, a network of three flagship institutes at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, and University College London (UCL). This ambitious initiative is translating promising scientific breakthroughs into new treatments for dementia, with a combined team of 70 scientists committed to identifying the compounds that will form the life-changing treatments of tomorrow.
