Glasgow Memory Clinic to support Scottish Opera’s Memory Spinners for people with Dementia and their carers

Glasgow Memory Clinic prides themselves in seeking initiatives that can support and help people with dementia. That’s why we are delighted to be the corporate sponsor of Scottish Opera’s Memory Spinners.

About Scottish Opera’s Memory Spinners

Memory Spinners is a project run by Scottish Opera for participants living with dementia and their carers or support workers. Using an opera from the current repertoire as a creative starting point, the group devises its own interpretation of the opera through songs, movement, drama and art activities over the course of eight weeks, culminating in a performance for friends and family. The group has been running since 2010.

The autumn term runs as follows: Glasgow: Mon 9 Oct to Mon 1 Dec Edinburgh: Tue 17 Oct to Tue 6 Dec

Speaking about the partnership, Clinic Development Manager at Glasgow Memory Clinic, Alison Cranmer said: ‘Dementia is one of the greatest challenges we face in society today. Businesses and organisations have the power to make a big difference for people with dementia and their carers by making a commitment to become more dementia-friendly.

We are thrilled to support such a worthwhile project that clearly enriches the lives of those who are taking part. The Memory Spinners classes provide a welcome and enjoyable break from what can be very difficult and challenging times for the person with the condition and their loved ones. I’d love to see more companies following the same lines as Scottish Opera and providing these types of activities’.

About Glasgow Memory Clinic

Glasgow Memory Clinic is an independent research organisation engaged in national and international research studies that seek to find better treatments for those with memory impairment, Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia.

Glasgow Memory Clinic relies on volunteers who are aged 50+ and are in good general health. As there is an initial screening process, we need more volunteers so we have enough people to take part in any one particular study. As well as being a state of the art facility, the clinic provides a very welcoming and comfortable space. There are a number of break-out areas, free Wi-fi plus complimentary refreshments are on offer all day in the café. Making volunteers and members of their family feel relaxed and at ease is of the utmost importance.

Volunteers receive all medical care, attention and treatment completely free of charge. You will also be reimbursed for any travel expenses to and from the clinic.
