Diary – Areej
At our clinic, we are always eager to provide opportunities for young, ambitious individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in research. This is why we are pleased to offer a short period of work experience for those who are looking to get a glimpse into the world of healthcare and research. Recently, Areej spent two weeks with our team and we were thrilled to have her on board. During her time here, she was able to observe our clinical operations, work closely with our researchers, and gain valuable insight into the inner workings of the our industry. We are excited to continue offering these opportunities to young people and help guide them on their path towards success.
Here are some highlights from Areej’s time at the clinic:
“I can gladly say that my two weeks working as a summer student in Glasgow Memory Clinic has been two weeks very well spent. Throughout my time there, I had the opportunity to meet all the amazing and hardworking people in every team and witness their day to day life in each department, as well as do my own part to make life easier for them. Every department had their own unique aspects to them, and were all equally appealing and intriguing to observe and work in.
The majority of my time was spent in patient liaison, a lively department. I was given lots of opportunities for hands on experience. I confidently developed my skills in the administrative side of work in the clinic, where dealing with files had become second nature to me (I could probably staple something perfectly with my eyes closed now). It was encouraging seeing the huge amount of people across Scotland showing interest in and signing up for the trials ongoing in the clinic. In addition to this, I was also able to give lunch to patients and issue expense cards along with the admin work.
Above all, I would say the best aspect of working with the clinic was definitely the people! Although being a usually reserved and quiet person, I found that I was able to easily come out my shell and become more comfortable with meeting new people – as a matter of fact, I found it exciting to do so. Every staff member is welcoming, friendly, and a joy to talk with. A positive environment was maintained throughout every department of the clinic, and all teams work incredibly well together.
Overall, I would encourage all young people like me (especially interested in STEM) to take hold of any opportunity to work here. It is without a doubt that you will leave with a widely developed skillset and many new friends. I will definitely be looking to spend my future summers here at Glasgow Memory Clinic!
